A Mother’s Resilience: Naiya Atkins’ Extraordinary Journey to Motherhood and Heart Transplant
On January 31, 2024, the halls of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center echoed with joy as 37-year-old first-time mom Naiya Atkins walked out, cradling her newborn son Joseph “JoJo.” It marked the end of a harrowing year-long battle for Naiya, one that included a heart attack, cardiac arrest, heart failure, and a life-saving heart transplant.
A Mother’s Struggle Begins
Naiya’s journey began on February 1, 2023, when she welcomed JoJo into the world. Little did she know that the first year of her son’s life would be a tumultuous odyssey of health challenges. Just seventeen days after giving birth, Naiya’s life took a drastic turn.
On February 18, 2023, at 2 a.m., Naiya experienced severe dizziness and nausea. Concerned, her mother wasted no time and called for an ambulance. Despite feeling no chest pain, the situation was critical. Naiya’s blood pressure, already a concern since her pregnancy, had triggered a heart attack.
A Rare Diagnosis: Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection
Under the guidance of Dr. Chirag Patel and the interventional cardiology team, Naiya was diagnosed with a rare condition: Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection. Her artery walls were spontaneously tearing, obstructing blood flow to her heart. Despite swift intervention, her heart suffered irreversible damage, setting the stage for a challenging journey ahead.
A Mother’s Heart on the Edge
Despite the team’s efforts to remove blockages and stabilize Naiya’s condition, her heart continued to weaken. Dr. Fazal Ali and the Advanced Heart Failure Treatment and Transplant team stepped in, implementing a balloon pump and intravenous medications. By September, with her organs failing, Naiya faced the stark reality that her only lifeline was a heart transplant.
In November, she was admitted to the hospital, awaiting a donor. The holiday season passed within the sterile walls of the medical center, away from family and her newborn son.
A Ray of Hope: The Transplant Call
On January 5, 2024, the awaited call came. On January 6, Dr. Margarita Camacho, Surgical Director of Heart Transplant at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, orchestrated a life-saving heart transplant for Naiya.
A Miracle Walks Out
With her new heart, Naiya emerged from the hospital on January 31, 2024, a walking testament to resilience and the marvels of modern medicine. She reflects on feeling like a “walking miracle” and expresses gratitude to the medical team that accompanied her through the highs and lows, from JoJo’s birth to the triumphant exit with her revitalized heart.
Naiya’s journey exemplifies the indomitable spirit of motherhood and the extraordinary feats achievable through medical expertise and unwavering determination. As she embraces her second chance at life, Naiya stands as an inspiration to all who witness her remarkable story.
