Pro-ICE counterprotestors faced off with immigrant rights demonstrators outside Newark’s Delaney Hall on Saturday, marking the ninth day of protests over conditions inside the detention center.
Immigrant rights advocates, families and allies have held daily vigils outside the facility since detainees inside began a hunger and labor strike on May 22. Those strikers have released a letter, saying they were served expired food, are not receiving proper medical care and have been denied due process for their immigration cases.
Department of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin has denied these claims stating Wednesday that the detainees are receiving the “calories they want.”
The protests have escalated in the evenings over the last week as immigration officials have clashed with demonstrators. The facility has become a flashpoint for President Donald Trump’s mass deportation policy, with more detainees at other immigrant detention centers across the country conducting their own hunger strikes.
