What’s Missing From The Delaney Hall Story

From spoiled food to tear gas, what’s unfolding inside Newark’s Delaney Hall has been building for nearly a year.

Detainees have been on a hunger and labor strike at Newark’s Delaney Hall since last Friday, demanding an end to spoiled food, inadequate medical care and wages as low as $1.50 a day.

On Thursday, advocates and families reported Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents used tear gas and force on hunger strikers inside the facility, but the Department of Homeland Security said that staff responded to a fight “involving detainees.”

This is an escalation that has drawn elected officials from across the region and renewed calls to shut the center down.
