Wali Bey, 42, Identified In Deadly Newark Police Shooting
NJ officials identified the man and officer involved in a fatal Newark police shooting now under investigation by the Attorney General.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has released the names of the man and police officer involved in a fatal police shooting earlier this week in Newark. Officials identified the deceased as 42-year-old Wali Bey of Newark and the officer as Newark Police Officer Nashid Reynolds.
According to the Attorney General’s preliminary findings, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. on January 19 near Ross Street and Evergreen Avenue, where plainclothes and uniformed officers were conducting surveillance. Authorities said Officer Reynolds approached other officers and a group of detained civilians before firing his weapon, striking Bey and another man who were inside a vehicle.
Both victims were taken to University Hospital, where Bey was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m. The second civilian was treated for injuries and later released. No officers were physically injured, officials said.
The Attorney General’s Office is continuing to investigate the shooting, as required under state law for all deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement. The findings will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
