Newark Activists To March Against Police Brutality, Ice Enforcement On October 22
People’s Organization for Progress will lead a downtown Newark demonstration as part of the National Day of Action Against Police Brutality.

NEWARK, N.J. — Community activists and advocates for police accountability will gather in downtown Newark on Thursday, October 22, for a march and rally marking the National Day of Action Against Police Brutality, with organizers also calling attention to federal immigration enforcement and its impact on Black and brown communities.
The demonstration, led by the People’s Organization for Progress (POP), will begin at 5 p.m. outside the Newark Fraternal Order of Police headquarters at 51 Rector St. Participants will rally there before marching through downtown Newark.
The annual protest is part of a national day of action focused on police violence, accountability, and the treatment of communities of color.
According to organizers, more than 40 cities held demonstrations last year to draw attention to what they describe as continuing injustices in policing.
Thisyear’ss activities will place additional emphasis on the actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, and calls to remove federal immigration enforcement operations from local communities.
Zayid Muhammad, an activist affiliated with New Jersey Communities for Accountable Policing (NJCAP), said immigration enforcement should be a central focus of this year’s demonstrations.
“This year, we should have a heavy emphasis on ICE out of our communities,” Muhammad said.
“No guardrails. No accountability. People are being shot and snatched in front of their children, and their communities are being paralyzed by terror and fear.”
“This is policing at its worst. This is fascist policing,” he added.
Muhammad’s remarks reflect organizers’ concerns about aggressive enforcement tactics and what they view as inadequate oversight and accountability. The announcement did not independently verify his allegations.
Newark march part of national demonstrations
The People’s Organization for Progress, a Newark-based grassroots advocacy organization, is organizing the local march as part of the broader national effort.
Participants will assemble outside the Fraternal Order of Police headquarters before proceeding through downtown Newark. Organizers have not provided a detailed march route.
The demonstration is intended to draw attention to police brutality, demand greater accountability, and highlight concerns about the impact of law enforcement practices on Black and brown residents.
Organizers also said activists in Jersey City are considering a related action, although no confirmed time or location has been announced.
