Selected Muralist will be notified on October 24th, 2023 and announced by October 27th, 2023.
WHAT: Essex Plaza was included in The Lincoln Park Historic District listing on the National
Register of Historic Places in 1984. Essex Plaza, a 451‐unit apartment building for the poor and elderly seniors located at 1060 Broad Street, once was once an eight‐story Federal office building (“The Industrial Office Building”). Essex Plaza touches the Central and East Wards in the City of Newark, NJ.
The “Historic Essex Plaza Lobby Mural” should effuse the rich historical spirit of the community, of the building itself, its occupants and resilient spirits of the City of Newark. Inspiration can be drawn from the past, present or future vision of Essex Plaza which fits seamlessly within the Lincoln Park neighborhood being an arts district. There is a $7,500 muralist stipend award (does not include materials).
To be eligible, the applicant must be an artist or collective in Newark, NJ or the Greater Newark area that has worked or exhibited their work in Newark, NJ within the past 7 years.
Submissions will be reviewed by Fairstead, Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District, and a representative group of residents of Essex Plaza, 1060 Broad Street.
