Appealing for Justice: Securing Paterson’s Safer Tomorrow

“As a representative of Paterson and a staunch advocate for our community’s safety and prosperity, I fully support the Attorney General’s decision to appeal the ruling, which threatens to undo the tremendous progress we’ve made in restoring public trust and improving law enforcement in our city. This setback is deeply troubling, especially after nearly two years of concerted efforts and significant investments aimed at strengthening our police department and protecting the people of Paterson.

“Over the past two years, the state’s oversight has proven to be a crucial catalyst for positive change. During this period, we have seen tangible and measurable improvements in public safety, as violent crime has decreased significantly, and the relationship between law enforcement and the community has profoundly transformed. These gains are a direct result of hard work, collaboration, and a clear focus on what Paterson needs: safety, accountability, and trust. In fact, Paterson has experienced a nearly 60% decrease in homicides compared to 2022, and the number of shooting victims and shooting incidents are down by one-third (1/3) compared to 2022. This remarkable reduction in gun violence is a testament to the effectiveness of the state’s intervention and the dedication of our police officers.

“Paterson was in a crisis when state intervention became necessary. A breakdown in trust between the police and the community had left us vulnerable to rising crime and instability. The decision to step in was not just appropriate; it was essential. The state’s leadership has guided us through this challenging period, and we cannot afford to let this progress be reversed. This appeal is not just a technical legal matter; it is about preserving the integrity of our city and ensuring that the hard work and progress made by our police officers, local leaders, and community members continue to ensure Paterson, a city with so much potential, remains on the path to safety, unity, and success. The work done by investing in training, rebuilding morale, and restoring faith in our institutions has paid off, and we must not allow it to be undone.

“The progress we’ve seen in Paterson is not just a result of state oversight; it’s the product of a renewed partnership between law enforcement and the community. Together, we’ve shown that we can create lasting change when we focus on building trust, fostering cooperation, and addressing the root causes of crime. That is the future we are fighting for. Paterson’s future is at a critical crossroads. We must focus on what works for stronger public safety, community relationships, and local leadership. I am confident that with continued effort and determination, we can ensure a brighter, safer future for all of Paterson’s residents. This is not just about winning an appeal; our Paterson residents must feel safe tomorrow.”
