“Wayne Brady Unveils Magical Transformation as ‘The Wiz’ in Broadway’s Spectacular Revival”

This groundbreaking musical is set to liven up Broadway at the Marquis Theatre (210 West 46th Street) with preview performances starting on March 29 and the grand opening on April 17.

The musical, currently on a coast-to-coast pre-Broadway tour, has been a sold-out success since its premiere in Baltimore in September 2023. Returning “home” after 50 years, the tour has captivated audiences across 13 cities, from its birthplace in Baltimore to its current stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The star-studded cast includes Wayne Brady as ‘The Wiz,’ Nichelle Lewis as ‘Dorothy,’ Deborah Cox as ‘Glinda,’ Melody A. Betts as ‘Aunt Em’ and ‘Evillene,’ Kyle Ramar Freeman as ‘Lion,’ Phillip Johnson Richardson as ‘Tinman,’ and Avery Wilson as ‘Scarecrow.’ The ensemble features a talented array of performers, promising a magical and unforgettable experience.

Directed by Schele Williams, known for her work on “The Notebook” and the revival of Disney’s “Aida,” the production boasts award-winning choreography by JaQuel Knight, the mind behind Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” and “Black is King.” Additional contributions from Tony and Emmy-nominated writer Amber Ruffin and an impressive creative team promise an Oz like never before—a fusion of ballet, jazz, and modern pop that will redefine the journey down the yellow brick road.

The design team, featuring luminaries such as Academy Award-winning Hannah Beachler and Emmy Award-winning Sharen Davis, ensures a visually stunning experience. With a score by Tony Award-winning Charlie Smalls and Luther Vandross, this rendition of “The Wiz” is set to captivate a new generation while paying homage to its illustrious history.

Joining the producing team are industry powerhouses like Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, Brian Anthony Moreland, Kandi Burruss, Todd Tucker, and many more. Based on L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” this all-Black musical extravaganza promises to be a timeless and transformative experience.

“The Wiz,” which originally premiered on Broadway in 1975, went on to win seven Tony Awards, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Now, with Wayne Brady at the helm, this revival is poised to take audiences on a journey of wonder, magic, and self-discovery. Don’t miss the chance to witness the magic unfold on Broadway starting March 29.
