Famed painter Jacob Lawrence is best known for his portrayal of African-American life in his works. He was the first African-American artist to be represented in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Born in Atlantic City, he was just 23 years old when he gained national recognition with his 60-panel Migration Series. His works have been displayed in several museums including the Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
