Newark’s “Repack the Backpack” Event: Free Supplies & Health Services
Newark’s January 8th “Repack the Backpack” event offers school supplies, winter essentials, and health support.
As Newark students reach the halfway point of the academic year, city officials and community partners are stepping in to ensure they have the tools—and the health support—needed to finish strong.
Mayor Ras Baraka announced this week that the City of Newark will host the “Repack the Backpack” expo this Thursday, January 8, providing a vital mid-winter boost for local families.
The event will take place from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Luis Munoz Marin School, located at 633 Broadway.
A Comprehensive Support System
While many school supply drives occur in August, the “Repack” event addresses the reality that resources often dwindle by January. In collaboration with Wellpoint New Jersey and The Nia Hope Center, the city will distribute essential classroom items, including notebooks, binders, pens, and folders.
However, the initiative extends far beyond the classroom. Recognizing the challenges of the winter season, organizers are also providing:
- Winter Essentials: Free coats, hats, and socks.
- Nutrition: Distribution of groceries and household goods.
- Health Services: On-site COVID-19 testing, blood pressure and glucose screenings, and pediatric dental hygiene education.
- Administrative Aid: Wellpoint representatives will be available to help families navigate Medicaid and Medicare renewals.
Baraka said that the expo is a check-in on the city’s youth, noting that the progress of Newark’s students is a collective priority.
“We want the kids and their parents to know they are connected to a community that cares for them,” Baraka said in a press release.
“It may be cold outside, but the love and caring in this gymnasium gives all of us a feeling of warmth,” said Deputy Mayor of Community Engagement Jacqueline Mercado-Quiles.
Mercado-Quiles added that the event serves as a “reset” for students to evaluate their goals for the remainder of the year.
Strengthening the Safety Net
The event draws on a broad coalition of support, including the United Community Corporation and the Uplift Society. The Nia Hope Center is even bringing a “truckload of toys” to the event. Founder Dr. Hortensia Kelly noted that their mission is to empower residents to take charge of their wellness through equitable access to medical and lifestyle support.
“We want these gifts to bring joy and serve as a reminder that we are all connected to each other,” said Kelly.
