Your teacher is eager to meet you.
Are you ready for school, too? Do you have your crayons, pencils, and a new outfit picked out for your first day? Alright, let’s go, and read these great back to school and new school year books…
Let’s face it: your very first day of school can be scary. You’ve never done school before, so it’s natural that you’d be uneasy, but “Welcome to the Classroom! By Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman (Knopf, $18.99) can help make you feel better.
“Everything is new” in a classroom where you’ve never been before, but your teacher has spent the whole summer making sure that you’ll be fine and that this year is going to be awesome. You’ll make new friends, maybe ones from all over the world. You’ll learn to be kind and patient, you’ll have fun indoors and outside, and every day will be filled with things that are adventurous and exciting.
This adorable book is wonderfully illustrated to include kids of all nationalities and abilities, and a teacher that’s comforting and helpful. Your 4-to-7-year-old will love it. Bonus: There’s a poster beneath the books’ jacket.
For the child who’s already hexperienced a few days of school and is already complaining, “A Day Off School” by Oliver Jeffers and Kevin Waldron (Philomel, $18.99) is a nice little eye-opener.
Herbie wasn’t feeling all that great, and so his parents let him stay home from school for the day. He was “secretly” happy about that; imagine, a day filled with things that he wanted to do! He waited in bed until his sister left for school, then he got up, thinking about the possibilities for the unexpected gift of a free day.
But a day off from school is kind of boring. Eh. Herbie began to run out of fun things to do by himself. Though he didn’t want to, he started thinking about school…
“A Day Off School” is really cute, and it’s perfect for 6-to-8-year-olds.
And finally, “Getting Ready for Second Grade” by Vera Ahiyya, The Tutu Teacher, illustrated by Debby Rahmaila (Random House, $10.99) is ready for class!
Oscar is eager to start Second Grade – until he learns that he’s not going to be in the same class as his best friend. Dad says it’s a chance to “make new friends!” but Oscar’s not so sure about that. As he settles in, though, he looks around. Maybe Second Grade is going to be okay after all.
This is a great book for 6-to-8-year-olds but if your child is older or younger, check out the other books in this series. Bonus: a photography-ready “I’m Ready for Second Grade” sign is included.
If these books don’t quite hit the right tone, head to your local library or bookstore and ask for help finding the book your child needs. The staff there can help you with Back to School books now, and homework or just-for-fun books to read later in the year. Your child’s teacher will be glad you asked.
