SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. — What started as a personal health journey for Ameen Albany has grown into a thriving business redefining the juice bar experience in Scotch Plains. Albany and his wife, Roshonda Albany, are the owners of Hollywood Juice Shop, a Black-owned wellness café that blends nutrition, aesthetics and community connection.

“I’ve kind of been an entrepreneur since I was a kid without even realizing it,” Albany said, recalling organizing talent shows, fashion shows and designing flyers as a child. “I went through all the motions like I was an adult.”

Before opening their current business, Albany previously owned clothing stores and built a career in luxury retail, including work with Neiman Marcus. But it was a routine health screening that shifted his focus.

After reviewing his results, Albany realized his health was not where he wanted it to be. That moment led him to explore juicing, and eventually, to build a business centered around wellness.

“I started going to juice bars all the time, and one day it just clicked,” he said. “I thought, ‘This is a business. Open up your own.’”

Creating a Standout Concept

The idea for Hollywood Juice Shop did not come together overnight. Albany said he spent years refining the concept, focused on creating something that would stand out in a growing market.

“I kept asking myself, what’s going to make my business different?” he said. “What’s going to make someone come in and tell someone else about it?”

The answer was rooted in experience. Drawing from his background in luxury retail, Albany and Rashonda built a space designed to feel elevated, visually appealing and memorable. The name “Hollywood” reflects that vision, a brand that is both recognizable and rooted in presentation.

“Everything today is about experience,” Rashonda said. “People want something that looks good, feels good and is memorable.”

Inside the shop, that philosophy is evident in the décor, layout and attention to detail. Customers often take photos and share their visits, Ameen said, turning the space into both a wellness destination and a social experience.

More Than a Juice Bar

From the beginning, Albany said he envisioned the business as more than a neighborhood juice bar.

“We knew from day one this would be bigger,” Albany said. “Sometimes the world just has to catch up to what you’re doing.”

That vision is reflected in customer reactions. First-time visitors frequently ask about additional locations, giving the business the feel of a larger brand.

The menu also goes beyond traditional juice offerings. In addition to fresh juices and smoothies, Hollywood Juice Shop serves wraps, bowls and signature items designed to balance taste and nutrition.

“It’s about blending ingredients in a way that works,” Rashonda said. “You can have something that tastes good and still supports a healthier lifestyle.”

Community support and customer experience

Since opening in Scotch Plains, Albany said community support has played a major role in the shop’s early success. Within weeks, repeat customers became a consistent presence.

“There are people who have come in over 40 times already,” Albany said. “That’s loyalty.”

He attributes that response not only to the product, but to the overall customer experience.

“Something as simple as opening the door for someone or encouraging them to take a picture, those things matter,” he said. “It doesn’t cost anything, but it makes the experience memorable.”

Representation in Wellness

As Black business owners in the health and wellness space, Albany said their work carries added importance, particularly when it comes to addressing health disparities. They hope the business can encourage healthier habits, especially among younger generations.

“Health and wellness is critical in our community,” Albany said. “A lot of what we deal with comes down to diet and lifestyle.”

Like many entrepreneurs, Albany said one of the biggest challenges has been access to resources and guidance. To navigate that, he has focused on building relationships, joining chambers of commerce and connecting with other business owners.

“When you don’t have people around you who’ve done this before, you’re figuring things out on your own,” he said.

He also emphasized the importance of adaptability.

“Don’t be afraid to reset or pivot,” Rashonda said. “That doesn’t mean give up, it means adjust and keep going.”

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, Albany has his sights set on expansion. With a strong foundation in Scotch Plains, he plans to grow the brand into new markets.

“I see this everywhere,” Albany said. “Once the operation is right, you repeat it.”

For Ameen and Rashonda, success is measured not only by business growth, but by impact,  particularly when it comes to promoting healthier lifestyles.

“If younger generations start taking their health seriously,” Albany said, “that’s success for us.”
