Impacted By NJ Child Welfare? Join The Jan 10 Forum To Reform The System
NJ will host a Jan. 10 community forum in Pennsauken to amplify families’ voices and shape reforms to the state’s child welfare system.
New Jersey is calling on those with lived experience in the state’s child welfare system to help rewrite its future. On Jan. 10, the Powerful Families, Powerful Communities initiative will host a community forum at the UrbanPromise Campus in Pennsauken, aimed at empowering families to lead the charge in system reform.
The event, which runs from 12 to 4 p.m. (with registration beginning at 11 a.m.), is a collaborative effort between the New Jersey Department of Children and Families and Parents Inc. of New Jersey.
It marks a significant step in the statewide expansion of the Powerful Families, Powerful Communities initiative, a program dedicated to shifting power directly into the hands of the communities the system serves.
A Seat at the Table for Impacted Families
This forum is designed for community members who have been impacted by the New Jersey child welfare system. Organizers emphasize that the goal is not just to listen, but to build a system where every child can grow up safely with their family.
By sharing their voices, participants will help “reimagine” how the state supports families, ensuring that the next generation of child and family-serving systems are rooted in equity, safety, and community-led design.
Removing Barriers to Participation
The forum is providing several resources to ensure as many voices as possible are heard:
- Complimentary Meal: Attendees will share a meal during the discussion.
- Transportation Assistance: Help is available for those who need a ride to the Pennsauken campus.
- Childcare Stipends: Financial support is available to help parents cover the cost of childcare during the four-hour event.
The Mission: Powerful Families, Powerful Communities
The PFPC represents a fundamental shift in New Jersey’s approach to social services. Rather than the state dictating solutions to families, this initiative seeks to let communities “share and hold power to design their own futures.” By focusing on proactive support and positive life impacts, the forum aims to create a roadmap for keeping families together and safe.
