New Jersey Urban News – Code of Ethics
New Jersey Urban News is committed to delivering accurate, community-centered journalism that reflects the lived experiences of Black and Brown communities across New Jersey. The following principles guide our reporting and editorial practices:
1. Accuracy and Truth
We are committed to reporting the truth. We verify facts with credible sources and correct errors promptly and transparently. We provide context and strive for fairness in all our reporting.
2. Independence
We maintain editorial independence from funders, advertisers, and political interests. Our journalism is guided by the public interest, not private agendas.
3. Accountability and Transparency
We are accountable to our readers and the communities we serve. We disclose potential conflicts of interest and identify sources unless doing so poses a risk. Sponsored or opinion content is clearly labeled.
4. Community Respect
We treat all subjects and readers with dignity, especially those from marginalized communities. We avoid harmful stereotypes and seek to uplift underrepresented voices.
5. Equity and Inclusion
Our newsroom is guided by an equity-centered, anti-racist editorial approach. We reflect diversity in our sourcing, staffing, and storytelling priorities.
6. Corrections and Feedback
We welcome and encourage reader feedback. If we make a mistake, we correct it transparently and without delay.
7. Non-Exploitation
We do not exploit trauma for attention or engagement. We prioritize consent, context, and agency when covering sensitive issues like violence, health, or housing instability.
8. Civic Responsibility
We believe journalism is a public service. Our work is designed to inform, empower, and engage residents in civic life and democratic participation.
This Code of Ethics is a living document and may evolve as our newsroom grows. We invite public feedback and remain committed to serving the communities we cover with trust and integrity.
