Yolanda Adams To Perform At BergenPAC With Community Baptist Church Choir
Gospel singer Yolanda Adams will be a guest of the Community Baptist Church of Englewood Mass Choir for a performance at the Bergen Performing Arts Center (BergenPAC) on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m.
The timing for the collaboration couldn’t be better. While the Choir holds its signature celebration every January, Adams happens to be nearby starring in the off-Broadway production of Hell’s Kitchen. Though talks with BergenPAC have been in the works for a year, her current residency in the area finally turned the vision into a reality.
“I was in the right place at the right time and couldn’t ask for anything better,” says Adams. “BergenPAC is such a beautiful facility and when they learned I was in the area for Hell’s Kitchen, we began talking about what a great idea it would be to do a show like this. I’m really excited for it.”
Adams grew up doing theatre and drama before making her debut as a gospel singer in 1986. Some notable performances include her tribute to her friend Anita Baker at the BET Awards and her rendition of America the Beautiful at the 2019 Super Bowl. She has also done multiple performances at the White House and has earned accolades from the Grammy Awards, BET Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, and NAACP Image Awards. Her current performance with Hell’s Kitchen, which is a limited run, ends on Jan. 25.
“I love the fact that I’ve been stationary somewhere for the past three months,” she says. “Each night there’s a different type of audience. The Broadway audience is very distinct. They’re looking for different things like the color in the acting or the dynamics in the singing. To be a part of that has been a true blessing.”
As a gospel singer, this isn’t Adams’ first time performing with a choir. Her roots in gospel music go all the way back to her growing up and performing in the Southeast Inspirational Choir in Houston, Texas.
“They were a performance and traveling choir that was more professional,” she says. “With them, I learned so much about the art of community, taking a song and making it your own, the harmonies that go into a great performance, stage presence, and all of the things you need to capture the people’s attention while giving them some good news.”
A multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and actress, Adams will perform her best known hits including The Battle is the Lord’s, Open My Heart, Fragile Heart, and her newest single Church Doors from her latest release, Sunny Days, which has been nominated for Gospel Album of the Year for the Grammy’s, which will be Adam’s next stop following her performance at BergenPAC.
“You know you’re resonating with the people when they’re singing along with you,” says Adams. “It’s not just resonating in a musical sense, but on a level of human connection. That’s what we
all want as artists. You want people to feel the music and understand the inspiration behind it. They are powerful within themselves.”
