Small business owners in Perth Amboy and New Brunswick can apply for grant funding to improve their storefronts through Middlesex County’s Façade Improvement Program. 

The county has launched this pilot initiative to help small business and commercial property owners improve the exterior appearance of their buildings and drive more customer traffic to strengthen the local economy.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios. “However, many businesses lack the capital needed for important exterior upgrades. With this program, the County is directly investing in their success, while also helping preserve and elevate the unique architectural character found in both municipalities.”

What does the program offer?

The Façade Improvement Program offers $4,000 to $6,000 in county‑matched reimbursements for eligible storefront upgrades. It also provides up to $50,000 in county funding for each business improvement district, with reimbursements issued after projects are completed and verified.

Who is eligible?

The New Brunswick City Center and the Perth Amboy Business Improvement Corporation will manage applications and approvals for applicants in their business improvement districts. Small businesses and commercial property owners located within these districts may qualify for façade improvement grants.

How do business owners apply?

Businesses located in New Brunswick and Perth Amboy must apply through the New Brunswick City Center and the Perth Amboy Business Improvement Corporation, respectively. Applicants must also complete technical assistance training and education; eligible courses will be provided to those who submit applications. Applicants must also submit a form agreeing to program guidelines.
