How NJ Nonprofits Are Stepping Up For Families This Holiday Season
New Jersey nonprofits are providing free Thanksgiving meals, coats, and support to families in need across the state.
NEW JERSEY — On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, several New Jersey nonprofits are providing meals, essential items, and holiday support to families in need, demonstrating the power of community care during the season.
Lunch Break Community Kitchen — Red Bank
Lunch Break is hosting its Thanksgiving Feast & Coat Giveaway, combining nourishment with winter support for local residents. The Community Kitchen will serve dine-in meals from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a to-go option available until 1 p.m. Coats will be distributed between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at 121 Drs. James Parker Blvd.
Volunteers say the giveaway ensures families not only have a Thanksgiving meal but also the warm clothing they need as temperatures drop. “I don’t have family nearby, and this meal means I won’t have to spend the holiday alone or hungry,” said Maria Lopez, a Red Bank resident planning to attend Lunch Break’s Thanksgiving event.
Beyond Thanksgiving, Lunch Break operates year-round to support the community. The organization hosts Friday Night Community Dinners, providing a warm meal alongside social activities like bingo, poetry, and game nights. They also run kids cooking classes, seasonal clothing drives, and events like a community picnic and softball classic, creating opportunities for families to connect and receive support throughout the year.
Urban Cuisine — Newark
Urban Cuisine is hosting a free Thanksgiving meal distribution Thursday, Nov. 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 399 Bergen St., Newark. Meals are offered on a first‑come, first‑served basis.
“We are giving back to the community who pours into us,” said the Urban Cuisine team. “Even though the shutdown is over and benefits have been redistributed, we know families are still struggling, so we’re hosting this Thanksgiving giveaway with full, ready-to-eat meals on a first-come, first-served basis.”
Urban Cuisine’s Thanksgiving service is part of its ongoing efforts to support Newark residents. The organization has run meal distributions since the pandemic shutdown, focusing on families who rely on SNAP benefits or face food insecurity. In addition to holiday programs, Urban Cuisine provides meals and outreach throughout the year, reinforcing its commitment to the community.
The Rotary Club of Ocean City–Upper Township (OCUT Rotary) — Marmora / Upper Township / Ocean City Area
OCUT Rotary is holding a free community Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 27 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 20 North Shore Road, Marmora. Residents of Ocean City and Upper Township are welcome.
Throughout the year, OCUT Rotary is actively involved in service projects, community fundraisers, and local awareness campaigns. They partner with regional organizations and host events like health and public awareness initiatives, continuing their mission of civic engagement and support well beyond the holiday season.
Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) — Trenton
TASK will provide both dine-in meals and Thanksgiving to-go meals for individuals who prefer takeout or have limited access to services on Nov. 27, from 10:30am – 12:45pm. Patrons who eat on-site will also receive an additional takeout dinner to ensure they have food later in the day, a practice the organization maintains because many community resources remain closed on Thanksgiving.
“I don’t always know where my next meal is coming from, so being able to get a Thanksgiving dinner here means a lot to me and my kids,” said James Carter, a nearby resident planning to pick up a meal.
TASK provides year-round services to support the community, including adult education programs, job readiness workshops, and arts and skills training. They also operate over 50 weekly meal sites across the region, ensuring consistent access to nutritious food and resources. Thanksgiving is just one of many ways TASK addresses hunger and promotes long-term stability for families in Trenton.
