New Brunswick Train Station Breaks Ground On $70 Million Renovation
NJ Transit launches $70M renovation of New Brunswick Station to modernize, expand, and improve accessibility.
Middlesex County and NJ Transit have officially launched construction on a $70 million overhaul of the New Brunswick Train Station, ushering in a multi-year revitalization effort to reshape one of New Jersey’s busiest transit hubs.
Announced on Tuesday, the project aims to modernize outdated infrastructure, expand capacity, and enhance accessibility at the historic station, which has stood as the gateway to New Brunswick for over a century.
Initial work will begin this fall along Easton Avenue and Albany Street, focusing on new sidewalks and exterior improvements. Subsequent phases will introduce a modern ticketing center, complete with an elevator and upgraded waiting areas, and implement major renovations to both the station building and platforms.
The station has long connected local residents, Rutgers University students, and regional commuters to jobs, education, and culture along the Northeast Corridor. With upgrades to elevators and escalators recently completed, officials emphasized that the next wave of investment will improve experiences for thousands who rely on the hub daily.
Rutgers University also signed a three-year sponsorship deal to officially name New Brunswick Station the “Home of Rutgers University.” Key features of the upcoming renovation include expanded pedestrian passages, modernized waiting areas and signage, and upgraded trainway systems.
The station’s overhaul draws from $49 million set aside in the state’s FY2023 budget. All renovations are slated for completion by 2028.
