The Mercy House Treats 300 Mothers in Need With Mother’s Day Gifts During Multi-Day Giveaway
Mothers who visited The Mercy House’s locations in Jersey City, Newark, and Elizabeth were invited to select two gifts from a collection of items that included purses, sunhats, and costume jewelry. Additionally, special prizes, including perfume, makeup, and body cream, were raffled off to a few lucky recipients. All items were donated by archdiocesan parishes and individual supporters, with the Felician Sisters of Lodi assembling them into elegant gift bags.

Staff and volunteers at The Mercy House expressed hope that the mothers went home feeling recognized and appreciated for the sacrifices they make every day for their children.
“It’s fitting that The Mercy House celebrates Mother’s Day because May is the month of Mary, our Blessed Mother,” said Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House. “Much like Mary, the mothers we serve are inspiring examples of selfless love. They prioritize their children’s needs over their own and often go without. This event was our way of offering a small token of appreciation in addition to the year-round support we provide.”
The Mercy House will next host its third and final baby shower for pregnant women on June 4 at its Elizabeth location. It will also hold its annual Father’s Day Giveaway on June 9 in Jersey City, June 10 in Newark, and June 11 in Elizabeth. Fathers in need will be welcomed with gifts such as men’s grooming products, clothing, and other special items.

Founded in 2018, The Mercy House offers essential support to individuals and families in need, including nonperishable food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture, and assistance with employment and housing. Its three locations in Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth serve approximately 300 people each week.
