The Crossroads Theatre Company in New Brunswick is hosting its virtual gala “A Night With Crossroads” on May 20 at 7 p.m. The event is honoring late stage and screen icon Cicely Tyson.

Organizers say the event will “be shining an important light on her inspirational life and her influential body of work.” There will also be performances and special guests. Actress and singer Anika Noni Rose is serving a the host for the gala.

Tyson died on Jan. 28 at the age of 96. Her career spanned more than 70 years. The award-winning actress was best known for her roles in the films Sounder, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and, more recently, primetime drama How to Get Away With Murder.

“Cicely Tyson’s art, artistry, and activism made things tangible for those who couldn’t see, hear or feel the humanity of the Black experience. She was meticulous and careful about choosing her roles. Her decades long career contributions to theatre and the craft of storytelling are the bricks that one-by-one birthed the notion of a Crossroads Theatre Company, and keeps us striving in our quest to tell our stories, authentically,” the Crossroads Theatre Company said in statement released in January.
