Firefighter Anthony Holland makes history this week becoming the first African American firefighter promoted to the rank of lieutenant of the Linden Fire Department.

During an outdoor ceremony at fire headquarters on July 29, Holland was sworn into the new rank with wife and children by his side. Holland has been part of the Linden Fire Department for seven years. He was promoted along with seven other firefighters.

“It’s a great opportunity for leadership, I’m just looking to be a role model for other young men and women growing up to see someone that looks like them and that they can do it too, so I just look to strive to be a role model for everybody,” Holland said.

Linden Fire Department William Hasko said Holland’s promotion is well-deserved. Holland is the first African American promoted in the department’s 104-year history.

“As Chief of the Department, I’m extremely proud of Firefighter Holland and could not think of a better person to have the honor of being the first African American Officer in the Linden Fire Department. Anthony has paved the way and set the bar for those wanting to follow in his footsteps,” Hasko said.
