Reports indicate that Newark has had its first coronavirus (COVID-19).

The man reportedly died on Wednesday and was in his early 40s with underlying health conditions. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced the death during is daily coronavirus update on Facebook Live.

“I must begin by sending out condolences as we now have a Newark resident who has died from complications surrounding the coronavirus,” Baraka said. “Although he had underlying health issues, he was young, just in his early 40s. So we all have to take this very, very seriously.”

Baraka recently enforced a 8 p.m. curfew in Newark to slow the spread of COVID-19. The curfew is mandatory unless there’s an emergency or people are coming from/going to work. All non-essential stores that do not sell food, medical supplies, prescriptions, gas, or household goods must close by 8 p.m. tonight and not reopen until further notice.
