As a born and bred Jersey boy, a splashy watering hole for Happy Hour and an equally delightful epicurean spot to Munch on Brunch have become weekly staples for me. I was shocked last week when I saw that New Jersey ranked as one of the worst places in the country to have Brunch–with the city of Paterson listed as one of the worst places in the country for Brunch. Whoa?!? What?!?

The website Lawnmower.com recommended that folks look elsewhere if they want a good spot for brunch, with only the Brick City–Newark mentioned as one of the better places to grab a brunch bite. The website examined access, quality, community, events, and demand in determining the list. I’m sure other things like cost, location, menu, staff, and overall customer satisfaction also figured into the mix.
The city of Paterson was last in providing those amenities to the brunch crowd, per the list. The cities with the best places to munch on brunch are Portland, Oregon, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Chicago, rounding out the top 10.
For those unfamiliar with when and what “Brunch” is, it’s the gray period between breakfast, lunch and dinner–usually between 11 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon to eat and chow down. In most cases, a glass of champagne with a splash or two of orange juice–a Mimosa, or Bloody Mary–tops off the meal.
The website should have examined and sampled my favorite brunch and Happy Hour spots, Delta’s in New Brunswick or Vonda’s Kitchen in Newark. I’ve also heard a new place in Philly called Booker’s serves a bangin’ brunch.

At any rate, I chuckled when I read the list and decided that a weekly trek to DC or Chicago for brunch isn’t for me. So, my Bloody Mary and Mimosa with shrimp and grits or chicken and waffles for Brunch at my usual local spots in NJ will remain unchanged. Cheers!!

I agree with your choice of Vonda’s
Kitchen. Never had brunch there but
breakfast and dinner is delicious.
